At Catalyst Psychiatry in Corvallis, OR, we believe in empowering you to take control of your mental health journey. One of the innovative tools we offer is GeneSight, a pharmacogenetic test designed to help you understand how your genes affect your response to psychiatric medications. In this blog, we’ll explore what GeneSight is, how it works, and how it can support your mental health journey.
What Is GeneSight?
GeneSight is a pharmacogenetic test that examines how your unique genetic makeup influences your response to psychiatric medications. By analyzing specific gene variants, GeneSight helps reduce the often frustrating trial-and-error process associated with finding the right medication for you. This test not only guides your healthcare provider in selecting the most effective medications but also assists in determining the appropriate dosages tailored to your individual needs.
What Does GeneSight Test For?
GeneSight identifies gene variants that affect how your body processes various psychiatric medications. One key gene tested is the serotonin transporter gene, known as SLC6A4, which plays a significant role in how well you respond to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Additionally, the MTHFR gene is assessed, as it impacts folate metabolism, which is closely linked to mood regulation. While GeneSight provides valuable insights and guidance, it’s important to note that it does not recommend a specific medication. Instead, it narrows down your treatment options, empowering you and your healthcare provider to make informed decisions.
How GeneSight Works
The process of obtaining your GeneSight results is simple and non-invasive. During your appointment, we will collect a sample using two cotton swabs from the inside of your cheeks. This sample is then shipped to GeneSight’s lab, where it undergoes analysis. You can expect to receive your results in about a week, and we will provide you with a copy in an easy-to-read format, making it straightforward to understand how your genetic profile may influence your medication options.
What to Expect at Catalyst Psychiatry
If you are not a current patient at Catalyst Psychiatry, we charge a $300 consultation fee for GeneSight testing. This fee covers two one-hour appointments: one before the test to discuss your mental health history and another after, to review your results and discuss next steps. Please note that this consultation fee is separate from the cost of the GeneSight test itself. The GeneSight test offers a sliding fee scale, with costs up to $330, and may or may not be covered by your insurance. If you are a current Catalyst Psychiatry patient, there is no additional consultation fee.
